3 Daily Habits

John Addison: 3 Daily Habits of Very Successful People

July 25, 2016
I believe there are two things in life: results and crappy excuses for not achieving results.
As a society, we’ve gotten really good at giving excuses and readily accepting them. I’m not vilifying our society—our days are more jam-packed than ever and it seems like we are constantly being pulled in a thousand different directions. I’ve worked with some very dedicated, talented people who have not been able to achieve the results they should have. It wasn’t for lack of trying; it was lack of good habits.
Your habits and patterns determine the direction of your life, so it should come as no surprise that successful people have successful habits. In my more than three decades in business, I’ve practiced three habits in particular that I think have played a huge role in my success and can help you maximize yours.

1. Winners get out of bed early.

I know the business trend
right now is toward flexible schedules, but while you’re in bed sleeping, someone else is out working. And, the fact is, most CEOs aren’t sleeping until noon and rolling into the office midafternoon. They get up early and attack the day. In interview after interview, they say their routine starts with getting up around 5 or 6 a.m. and using the two or three hours before they get into the office to focus and prepare for the day ahead. That may mean exercise, meditation, catching up on current events pertinent to the business or any number of things, but when they do arrive at work, they are more productive and achieve more than most.
The old saying “the early bird gets the worm” came about for a reason. The people who are up and doing are the people who seize the opportunities first, so get up out of bed and put in the extra time and effort it takes to chase success. It’s not going to wait around for you.

2. Be a daily goal setter and a daily goal hitter.

There is nothing wrong with having long-range goals and dreams, but what you do today greatly affects whether or not you will achieve your future dreams. You have to intentionally design each and every day in a way that leads to getting things done that will maximize your results.
That does not mean being busy every minute of the day just for the sake of being busy. That means knowing what is important and focusing on those things.
Every night, or in those early morning hours you are using to prepare for the day ahead, set your daily goals. Don’t make goals for the entire week. Just for the upcoming day. Ask yourself what you must get done each day that will produce the most results and only work on those things. And make setting those goals a daily habit.

3. Focus, focus, focus.

Even if you set the goals, if you aren’t focused—and by that I mean working on what’s important now—you won’t be successful. Successful people always know what is important in the moment, they are relentless in getting it done, and they don’t get distracted by unimportant stuff. They have the ability to stay focused when other people are unfocused, which is no easy feat the higher up you move in an organization, because everyone wants a piece of your attention.
If you want to be successful, you’ve got to develop the discipline not to let anything take your focus off the important things that will get results. Sure, it’s going to take a lot of practice to develop that discipline, but at the end of the day those results are going to totally be worth the hard work.
Look, I’m not going to lie to you: Winning and success is quite often boring.
It’s doing the same successful thing over and over again. But there is a scoreboard in life and business, and establishing repetitive habits that lead to effective performance is the key to winning results—and results are what matters.

Eugenie Bouchard's mediocre run continued when the sixth-seeded Canadian was knocked out of the French Open 6-4, 6-4 in the first round by local favourite Kristina Mladenovic on Tuesday.

Will lady luck shine on Nadal?
Bouchard, dubbed the next big thing of women's tennis last year, arrived in Paris having lost six of her last seven matches and there was no improvement on court Suzanne Lenglen.
The Wimbledon runner-up, who had reached the last four at Roland Garros last year, resisted in the opening set but was completely overwhelmed in the second.
Mladenovic, ranked 44th in the world, struggled to handle the pressure after opening a 5-0 lead in the second set but a strong first serve on match point ensured a second-round meeting with either Czech Klara Koukalova or Montenegro's Danka Kovinic.

Fit-again Shami available for West Indies match

Mohammed Shami
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has apparently recovered from his knee injury and is available for India's next ICC World Cup league match against West Indies on March 6.

Shami was rested for India's previous match against United Arab Emirates as a precautionary measure but the Bengal pacer took part in the training activity at the Murdoch University Oval Sports Complex ground, in Perth, on Tuesday.

He took part in fielding drills and also bowled a bit. In case, Shami is picked in the playing eleven, Bhuvneshwar Kumar might again be sidelined after having made a comeback against the minnows in the last game, where he got a wicket and bowled at a good pace.

"Shami is fit and available for selection," India's media manager R N Baba said.

While there is no update on Bhuvneshwar, the pacer was on Tuesday seen having his ankle heavily strapped as he walked barefoot into the dressing room.

It may be a case of the ankle being taped to protect it from aggravating after having bowled full tilt in the last game. The WACA is a hard ground and a pace bowler's ankle takes more pounding on delivery landing compared to some of the other grounds.

However, it's not clear that whether Bhuvneshwar has again done some damage to his ankles or not but certainly the Indian team management are not taking any chances.

Danny Welbeck may frustrate at club level but put the Arsenal striker in an England shirt and he has proved himself to be a reliable figure on the international stage.
Welbeck scored two goals in England's 3-1 Euro 2016 qualifying victory over Slovenia at Wembley on Saturday, a win that kept Roy Hodgson's side top of Group E with 12 points from four games.
England struggled to find their rhythm for large parts against Slovenia and slipped behind when Jordan Henderson headed Milivoje Novakovic's free kick past Joe Hart.
Yet Wayne Rooney, winning his 100th international cap, scored an equaliser from the penalty spot before Welbeck came to life and grabbed two goals in six minutes.
‘I've never picked a squad without Welbeck’

Welbeck's first goal may have been a little scuffed but there was nothing fortunate about his second as the Arsenal striker combined perfectly with Raheem Sterling before applying a clinical finish past Slovenia goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
The 23-year-old, who signed for Arsenal from Premier League rivals Manchester United in September, has now scored 13 goals in 22 starts under Hodgson and the England manager was delighted with Welbeck's performance.
"I have always believed in Danny," Hodgson told reporters. "When I picked him for Euro 2012 many were surprised but I've never picked a squad without him -- even when he has not been playing regularly (for his club).
"I am pleased everyone is now recognising his talent."
‘He's getting better with every goal and every game’

Welbeck has scored two Premier League goals in eight appearances for Arsenal this season and has often been criticised for not scoring enough.
When Welbeck was sold to Arsenal for around £16 million pounds ($25.07 million), Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said the striker's record of 29 goals in 142 games was not good enough.
Welbeck's former United strike partner Rooney, however, believes the forward is improving with every match he plays.
"He's getting better with every goal and every game," Rooney, who scored his 44th international goal against Slovenia, said. "He deserves all the credit."

India consolidates No 1 ranking in ICC ODI list

World champions India have consolidated their top rank on the ICC ODI Team Rankings after sweeping the series against Sri Lanka, which concluded in Ranchi on Sunday.
-Scorecard
India had started the series at the third position on 113 ratings points and has finished on 117 ratings points – two ratings points clear of South Africa, which is involved in a five-ODI series against Australia.
In contrast, Sri Lanka have retained their fourth position but slipped to 108 ratings after conceding three ratings points. It now hosts England in a seven-ODI series, leading Alastair Cook's side by one ratings point.
However, with the Australia-South Africa series locked at one-all, both sides have an opportunity to regain the No 1 ranking.
But to make this happen, either side will have to win the remaining three matches. If Australia wins the series 4-1, then it will move ahead of India by a fraction of a point (0.2 ratings points).
South Africa will end on 118 ratings points and Australia on 111 ratings points if the series result is reversed.

Asia Cup : Thirimanne, Malinga help Sri Lanka edge Pakistan

Asia Cup:

Lahiru Thirimanne
Lasith Malinga's brilliant five-wicket haul under pressure, and opener Lahiru Thirimanne's second ODI century, helped Sri Lanka script a thrilling 12-run victory over Pakistan in the opening match of the Asia Cup, at the Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, in Fatullah, on Tuesday.
Chasing an imposing 297 for victory, Pakistan were on course till Malinga came up with a fiery spell and bowled out the 'Men in Green' for 284 in 48.5 overs.
- Scorecard
The pacer first sent back danger man Shahid Afridi (4) and well-settled skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (73) in a span of three deliveries in his eighth over before returning to dismiss Saeed Ajmal (10) and Bilawal Bhatti (18) in his final one to finish with figures of five for 52.
Earlier, Thirimanne struck a fine 110-ball 102 to power Sri Lanka to a challenging 296 for six. He hit 11 fours and a six in his innings and starred in a 161-run stand with Kumar Sangakkara (67) for the second wicket to lay the foundation for a huge score.
Pakistan tried to stage a comeback in the middle overs as they picked up a few wickets, but skipper Angelo Matthews provided the late charge, cracking a 50-ball 55, to take Sri Lanka close to the 300-mark.
Pakistan failed to build partnerships at the top during their run-chase as they lost their first four wickets for 121 before Misbah and Umar Akmal (74) led a sensational fightback with attacking fifties.
Both added 121 runs for the fifth-wicket partnership to bring Pakistan back into the game. However, Malinga held his nerve and produced a match-winning spell to grab full points for his team.
Pakistan started their run chase on an attacking note, with opener Sharjeel Khan scoring quite a few boundaries before being dismissed by medium pacer Suranga Lakmal for 26.
Ahmed Shehzad and Mohammad Hafeez led the team's recovery with a 49-run stand for the second wicket but Sri Lanka fought back with quick strikes as Pakistan slipped to 83 for three inside 14 overs.
While Shehzad was cleaned up by left-arm spinner Chaturanga de Silva for 28, Hafeez was trapped in front of the wickets for 18 by Mathews.
Misbah and Sohaib Maqsood (17) steadied Pakistan with a cautious approach as they reached 121 for three before spinner Sachithra Senanayake had the latter caught at deep mid-wicket by Chaturanga de Silva.
With six wickets in hand and still requiring 175 runs to win, Pakistan looked in all sorts of trouble with their innings in complete disarray. But the pair of wicketkeeper-batsman Akmal and Misbah combined well and launched a counter offensive to regain the lost ground.
Both played aggressively and treated the loose deliveries with disdain to take Pakistan to 240 for 4, requiring 57 off 48 balls.
Lakmal returned to scalp the prized wicket of Akmal, who couldn't stop himself as he went for a massive drive on the up and only managed an outside edge to keeper Sangakkara.
Akmal's 72-ball stay at the crease was decorated with seven fours and three sixes.
Pakistan lost the plot after that and could not recover. They lost the last five wickets for just 43 runs.
Misbah also ran out of patience and was dismissed for 73 (84 balls, 4x4, 2x6) by Malinga.
Earlier, electing to bat, Sri Lanka made a watchful start before opener Kusal Perera (14) edged an Umar Gul delivery straight to Umar Akmal behind the stumps in the eighth over and were reduced to 28 for one.
However, Thirimanne continued his good run and notched his fifty off 56 balls in the 20th over, his first half-century since last July.
He and one-down batsman Sangakkara made sure Sri Lanka suffered no more damage as the two left-handed batsmen amassed runs at good pace and took Sri Lanka to the 100-mark in the 20th over.
The duo then changed gears, piling up 68 in the next 10 overs. Sangakkara, who is in red-hot form, brought up his 84th fifty in as many balls in the 27th over when he blasted Mohammad Hafeez for a boundary through the mid-wicket area.
In the 31st over, Thirimanne picked Hafeez for special treatment and sent him over deep midwicket to bring up the first six of the match and move into the 90s.
However, Pakistan came back into the match when Gul dismissed Sangakkara in the 32nd over, the batsman’s pull landing in the hands of Ahmed Shehzad.
Thirimanne brought up his hundred with a cover drive off Gul, but the Lankan opener doon departed as off-spinner Ajmal disturbed his off-stump in the 36th over.
Skipper Matthews, who came in to bat after Sangakkara's dismissal, plundered a four and six in consecutive balls off Ajmal in the 38th over before Sri Lanka suffered another blow in the next over when
Afridi deceived Mahela Jayawardene and induced a thick edge from his bat which disturbed the off-stump.
Afridi then dismissed Thisara Perera in the 43rd over, the spinner having him caught at deep mid-wicket.
Sri Lanka slipped to 245 for five. Another mix-up in the middle and new batsman Chaturanga de Silva was also walking back to the hut.
Ajmal and Junaid bowled well at the death overs but Dinesh Chandimal and Matthews shared an unbeaten 45-run stand for the seventh wicket to ensure Sri Lanka got close to 300.
For Pakistan, Umar Gul (2-38) and Afridi (2-56) picked two wickets each, while Saeed Ajmal had figures of 1 for 50.
